Course Offerings

Year-Long Filmmaking Class: “We Are The Light From The Shadows” (July 2024 – July 2025)
At the heart of the 2024-2025 program is a year-long documentary filmmaking course focused on intergenerational dialogue about Indian boarding schools and their lasting impact. Under the guidance of Nakota elder and Tribal leader Donovan Archambault, students will develop technical filmmaking skills while learning the ethical responsibilities of documenting personal stories and facilitating discussions on sensitive topics.

This project brings together boarding school survivors and younger generations, creating a shared space for understanding and connection. Students will explore and document the history and ongoing effects of boarding schools, examining healing and resilience within their community today.

Intentionally designed with sensitivity and respect, the course ensures that students approach storytelling carefully, honoring the experiences of those affected. Through digital storytelling, we will work together to celebrate the past, understand the present, and contribute to a more informed and compassionate future.

Spirit Horse: Traditional Native Indigenous Horse Painting & Symbolism (February – March 2025)
Explore the rich cultural traditions of Native Indigenous horse painting in this immersive workshop at MAPS Fort Belknap. Students will learn traditional painting techniques and symbolism while discovering the historical and spiritual significance of horses in Native Indigenous cultures. Through hands-on exploration and cultural teachings, participants will create three spirit horses—one for the MAPS studio collection, one as a cultural gift, and one personal piece—while maintaining a reflective sketchbook documenting their creative journey. This transformative experience combines traditional knowledge with contemporary artistic expression, guided by cultural advisors and knowledge carriers in our new Fort Belknap studio space.

Traditional Pipe-Making with Master Artist Donovan Archambault (April – May 2025)
Under the guidance of Master Artist and Tribal Elder Donovan Archambault, participants will learn time-honored techniques for crafting pipes, carrying forward traditions passed down through generations. This six-week workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn the practice of pipe-making while honoring and preserving cultural knowledge. Through hands-on instruction and cultural teachings, students will understand the technical skills and sacred significance of this traditional art form.

The workshop begins April 4th at the MAPS-Fort Belknap studio. Free for participants ages 14 and up, limited to 12 students.
